Youths urged to take education seriously

Kasama, March 12, 2015, ZANIS–Mines, Energy and Water Development
Minister Christopher Yaluma has urged youths in the Northern Province to
take education seriously.

Mr Yaluma says it was only through education that the country will
achieve sustainable development.

He assured youths that government was still committed to building a
university in the Northern Province as a way of enhancing education
standards in the area.

Mr Yaluma however encouraged youths to work hard in school in order
for them to have a better future.

He also noted that young people need to be empowered with land for them
to become economically independent.

Mr Yaluma further advised youths to consider applying for mining
licences especially that Northern Province is rich in mineral
deposits.

ZANIS reports that the Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister was speaking in Kasama today when he officiated at this year’s Youth Day Celebrations under the theme ‘The Youth: Building a Stable and Sustainable Future’.

And speaking earlier, Chishimba Mulenga, a youth
representative lamented about the high youth unemployment levels in the Northern
Province.

Mulenga said as a result many youths were involving themselves
in illicit activities like drug abuse and prostitution.

She has since appealed to the government to increase funding to youth
empowerment projects to enable them improve their livelihood.

This year’s Youth Day celebrations in Kasama, which attracted scores of
youths, was attended by Northern Province Minister Freedom Sikazwe,
senior government officials and different youth groups.
