As part of the International Women’s Day commemoration, women in Kalabo today begun celebrations  by cleaning public institutions.

ZANIS reports that the women cleaned the two hospitals in the district, the market, harbour and surrounding areas.

The women cleaned Kalabo District Hospital and Yuka Mission Hospital, Kashitu market and the harbour as the places were important in the lives of the people in the district.

The cleaning exercise is part of the many activities that have been lined up in the district to commemorate International Women’s Day which will be commemorated internationally on Sunday, March 8.

The Women in the district have also organized an interdenominational prayer meeting to thank God for their day and to commit every activity in God’s hands.

Recently, a Women Rights Activist Meebelo Nyambe explained that government had no excuse this time around not to appoint women in any position because women had dominated fields that were previously deemed to be for men.

Mrs Nyambe said she was personally looking forward to having women running key ministries such as Defence and parastatals like  Zambia Railways and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) among many other leading institutions in the country.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘ Gender is My Agenda:  Make it Happen’.
