Govt allocates K670,000 for agro dept in Luangwa

 

Luangwa, March, 2 ZANIS——Government has allocated K670, 000.00 to the Department of Agriculture and Livestock in Luangwa district to construct a deep tank, rehabilitate the Farmers Training Centre, rehabilitation of the Fisheries Office and construction of a fish hatchery.

 

Luangwa District Agriculture Coordinator, Ernest Munthali, disclosed this during a meeting in the District Commissioner’s office over the weekend, saying government in this year’s   budget has allocated K670, 000 to Luangwa for the said projects.

 

Mr Munthali said out of the total amount allocated to the department, K330, 000 will be for the construction of a second deep tank in the district while K100, 000 will go for the rehabilitation of the Kaunga Farmer Training Institute with K115, 000 for rehabilitation of the Fisheries Department Office block and K125, 000 for construction of a fish hatchery.

 

The DACO added that works will begin as soon as all the tender procedures are done in Lusaka and commended government for the development as it will enhance food security and create jobs in the district.

 

And Luangwa District Commissioner, Eunie Mumba, expressed happiness at the development and commended government for working hard in improving the agricultural sector in the district.

 

Mr Mumba said Luangwa district, which is a drought-stricken area, has potential for animal production and fish farming, adding that these developments will improve the food security and create jobs in the district.

 

He appealed to the Department of Agriculture and Livestock to quickly ensure that these projects are implemented to benefit the people of Luangwa, especially the vulnerable as the PF government requires to empower the local and vulnerable people in society.

 

The District Commissioner said the PF government was in a hurry to implement its promises to the people and urged public service workers, who are the implementers of government programmes, to ensure that what government plans is done so that poverty is alleviated amongst the people.

 

He urged the Department of Agriculture and Livestock to engage reliable contractors who will do a better job that will benefit the people of Luangwa for a long time.
