THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ), Non-Governmental Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) and some political parties have commended President Lungu for appointing Irene Mambilima as Chief Justice.
LAZ president George Chisanga said in a statement yesterday that LAZ welcomes the President’s decision to appoint Justice Mambilima.
He said Justice Mambilima’s appointment will go a long way in restoring public confidence in the judiciary.
“This appointment, if ratified, will bring an end to the long-standing impasse that LAZ has faced over the issue of appointing a substantive Chief Justice,” Mr Chisanga said.
NGOCC chairperson Sara Longwe said in a statement yesterday that the council has no doubt that Justice Mambilima will excel in her new portfolio.
Ms Longwe said Justice Mambilima has exhibited rare attributes of professionalism and courage in her execution of her duties which will greatly benefit the judiciary
“Given her track record as deputy Chief Justice and chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), we have no doubt that she will excel in her new portfolio,” she said.
Ms Longwe said Justice Mambilima has stood firm and provided exemplary leadership even in the face of adversity.
“Justice Mambilima’s professionalism is exemplified in the manner she presided over the January 20 presidential election which has won her accolades from both local and international observers,” she said.
Ms Longwe said Justice Mambilima will restore the much-needed confidence in the justice system.
MMD president Nevers Mumba said the party is encouraged by the choice of the Chief Justice and that it is looking forward to working with her.
National Restoration Party president Elias Chipimo commended Mr Lungu for recognising the role and importance of women in governance.
Last week, President Lungu appointed Mrs Inonge Wina as Zambia’s first ever female Vice-President.
