-President Edgar Lungu has left
for Ethiopia to attend the 24th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU0
Assembly in Addis Ababa.
This is the first international assignment that President Lungu is undertaking as Head of State since his inauguration on January 25 as the country’s Sixth President following his election victory on the 20th of this month.
The President, who is accompanied by First Lady Esther Lungu, departed Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka at about 08:50
hours aboard the Presidential Challenger Jet.
President Lungu was seen off at the Airport by Republican Vice President
Inonge Wina, Minister of Justice Ngosa Simbyakula, Home Affairs
Minister Davies Mwila, Patriotic Front Secretary General Davies Chama,
Secretary to Cabinet Roland Msiska and Service Chiefs.
Others were Lusaka Mayor Mulenga Sata, Lusaka Province Permanent
Secretary Wamunyima Muwana, Ministry of Lands Permanent Secretary
I’nutu Suba and other senior government and Patriotic Front (PF) party officials.
And President Lungu said the 24th AU Summit will be about women empowerment which he said was important.
The Head of State stated that the AU Summit will be held under the theme,
“Year of Women Empowerment and Development towards Africa Agenda
2063.”
President Lungu is expected to give his maiden speech to the AU Assembly tomorrow on January 30 as
per tradition for the newly elected African Heads of States.
According to the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia the President Lungu is
also expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings during the summit
while the First Lady will attend the meeting of the Organisation of
African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA).
The 24th session of the AU Summit which started on January 23 will
close on January 31 .
The advance Zambian delegation comprising Ministers of
Foreign Affairs Harry Kalaba, Health – Joseph Kasonde and
Tourism and Arts Minister who is also acting Minister of Gender and Child
Development Jean Kapata are already in Addis Ababa.
