The Zambia Bureau of Standards
(ZABS) has destroyed an assortment of substandard and second hand goods worth K245, 000 at Chunga dump site in Lusaka.

The goods ranged from failed electric cables, bales of used under wear
and counterfeit black shoe polish.

ZABS Head of Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Zulu said 70,
000 m of failed electric cables, 632 dozens of counterfeit black
shoe polish and 90 bales of second hand under wear were confiscated
from suppliers in Lusaka and burnt in the operation.

Ms Zulu said the goods paused a health and safety risk to the public and was a danger to the environment.

She said ZABS will continue to conduct routine inspections to confiscate
sub-standard goods in order to ensure that consumers have access to quality
products on the market.

Ms Zulu stated that the failed cables are the major cause of fires and
electric shocks and urged consumers not to settle for cheap and sub-standard products.

And Competition and Consumer Protection Commission  (CCPC) Director of
consumer and public relations Brian Lingela urged consumers to be on
the lookout for sub-standard goods on the market.

Mr Lingela said consumers should always ensure that they check the labelling,
branding and packaging of products to avoid buying counterfeits.
