Govt. engages eleven contractors for 9, 600 bed spaces for UNZA, CBU and Evelyn Hone 


Lusaka, January 16, 2015,ZANIS —-   Government  says it has engaged eleven  contractors to build  9, 600 bed spaces at the three highest learning universities  and Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts and Commerce, respectively.

Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education minister Dr John Phiri  says 4, 160 bed spaces will be constructed at the University of Zambia in Lusaka while 3, 200 bed spaces will be built at the Copperbelt University on the Copperbelt.

Dr. Phiri said Mulungushi University on its part will receive 1, 280 bed spaces and Evelyn Hone College will get 960 bed spaces respectively.

ZANIS reports that the Minister said this today when he addressed contractors at the Ministry headquarters in Lusaka that lack of enough bed spaces in higher learning institution has been a problem for so many years now.

Dr Phiri stated that  living in  crowded environment has robbed students of the much needed sanity, a thing he said should not be tolerated.

He noted that it is not health for many  students to live in one room adding that this posses health concern which government want to address as a matter of urgency.

Dr Phiri expressed that government is determined to alleviate the problems in higher learning institutions across the country for the benefit of the students.

He urged management from all the higher learning institutions to take interest in the progress of these projects as they are the end users.

Dr Phiri stated that the programme of building student hostels will be extended to all TEVET colleges and Universities of education across the country.
