Government is happy with the reduction in road traffic accidents that have been recorded in the country during this year’s Christmas holiday.
Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Deputy Minister Panji Kaunda says government will enforce more measures to ensure mishaps on Zambian roads are reduced further in order to save lives.
Colonel Kaunda was reacting to statistics released by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) that indicate a reduction of 45 percent in road accidents during this year’s festive period as compared to last year.
He said in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today that the development was as a result of the works that have been put in by the RTSA.
He said efforts by RTSA have prompted road users to be extra careful on the roads by adhering to road rules and regulations.
Col. Kaunda has since commended RTSA and all other stakeholders for working round the clock to ensure road accidents are reduced in order to save hundreds of lives.
He meanwhile appealed to road users not to feel harassed by RTSA officers in the discharge of their duty because their work was aimed at reducing road accidents in the country.
He said road carnages affect everyone in the country adding that it was imperative therefore that all stakeholders work together to ensure that Zambian roads are made safe to drive on.
And Zambia Bus and Taxi Drivers Union president James Liambai attributed the reduction in road accidents to the maturity of drivers in the country and the effort being put in place by RTSA.
He said more efforts should be put in place to abate road mishaps.
Zambia has lost many people in road accidents who could have contributed immensely to the economic and political growth of the country.
