Government says it has learnt with shock and sorrow the death of retired Archbishop Emeritus of Kasama Catholic Archdiocese James Mwewa Spaita.
Archbishop Spaita, 80, died yesterday at Kasama General Hospital in Northern Province after an illness.
Chief Government Spokesperson Joseph Katema said Archbishop Spaita’s death is unbearable to the nation which is still engulfed in deep grief and sorrow following the demise of President Michael Sata.
Dr. Katema, who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, has since asked God to comfort and strengthen the nation as it goes through this painful loss.
He stated in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the late Archbishop Spaita served the church and the nation with passion, love and humility during his over 50 years of service in the Catholic Church.
The Chief Government Spokesperson described the late Archbishop Spaita as a peace and nation builder, a tireless and relentless voice and advocate of social justice and wellbeing of humanity.
He on behalf of the government and the people of Zambia conveyed deep-felt condolences to Kasama Catholic Archdiocese in particular and the Catholic Church as a whole on the demise of the late Archbishop.
Meanwhile, burial of the late retired Archbishop Emeritus James Mwewa Spaita of Kasama will take place on Friday, November 7, 2014 at the Cathedral grounds in Kasama.
Zambia Episcopal Conference communications officer, Mwenya Mukuka, said a vigil mass for the late Archbishop will take place on November 6, 2014 at 18:00 hours.
In a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Mukuka said burial will be preceded by a requiem mass at St. John Cathedral in Kasama at 09:00hours.
Archbishop Emeritus James Mwewa Spaita died yesterday November 4, 2014.
He was appointed bishop for Mansa diocese in 1974 and later become Archbishop of Kasama in 1990 before he retired in 2009.
