The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) has disclosed that it spends about K7,000 to K8,000 every month in burying unclaimed bodies.
UTH Public relations officer Mwenya Mulenga has told Qfm News in an interview that the hospital has been burying about 30 to 36 bodies every month as way of de-congesting its mortuary.
Mr. Mulenga says burying of unclaimed body with such a cost is what forms part of the challenges the Hospital is facing.
He also notes that people have been complaining about the smell that comes from mortuary without realizing that it does not come as result of not cleaning the mortuary but from the many unclaimed bodies that have been kept at the hospital’s mortuary for a long time.
Mr. Mulenga says this is why the hospital in many instances does not have an option but to spend money to have the unclaimed bodies buried.
