Emirates Airlines, which flies daily direct from Lusaka to Dubai and Harare, is showcasing Zambia’s musical talent to fans across the world.
The airline’s award-winning ice in-flight entertainment system features an expanding list of local artistes.
Those currently featured include Lusaka’s hottest hip hop collective Zone Fam and Zambian stars General Ozzy and Roberto.
The stars are part of Emirates’ African Pop Mix channel compiled by highly-respected taste maker DJ Edu on the First and Business Class ice-on-demand service.
Passengers can listen to Sinjonjo, the latest single from Zone Fam’s second album, along with Uzakakota Chikubaba from General Ozzy, produced by Jerry Fingaz & David Fangaz.
Meanwhile, Emirates’ African Mix compilation in Economy Class includes Zone Fam performing Contolola and another Zambian favourite, Roberto, singing Took You, featuring Kaufela.
Born in Kenya and resident in the UK, DJ Edu is playing a vital role in the renaissance of African music across the world. His ‘Destination Africa’ show for BBC Radio 1 Xtra presents the best of the current wave of artistes from across the continent.
His Emirates Mix draws on some of the 22 African destinations served by the airline, and among his current selections are three of Zambia’s most famous acts.
These channels will continue on ice Digital Widescreen for many months for listeners travelling on flights throughout Emirates’ global network to 135 destinations in 77 countries.
Zone Fam is the number one hip-hop group in Zambia with members individually known as Dope G, Jay Rox, Yung Verbal and Thugga. They cite their influences to be US artistes such as Jay-Z, Nas and Ludacris, as well as groups such as Slaughterhouse, but their sound is proudly Zambian and African.
The four-man Zone Fam group is signed with Kenya’s Tauraus Music record company and was nominated as one of the Best Southern African Acts at the 8th annual Nigerian Entertainment Awards.
They are Zambian music award winners, three-time Born and Bred winners, Channel O VMA nominees and Global African Music Award winners for Best African Group.
Their music is an exciting and unique blend of Zed beats, hip-hop and Afro-pop. They rap switching back and forth from English to Zambian languages such as Nyanja and local Pidgin, to African languages such as Zulu, in order to reflect their Southern African origins. They infuse their sound with genius use of local, African and global references to create lyric magic that everyone can relate to.
Roberto is a Zambian singer/songwriter/producer and the youngest of a musical family who entered the music scene as a rapper, and later turned singer after being inspired by Usher.
Roberto later encountered a career turning experience after living in South Africa for a period of time, where he wrote songs for and worked with well-known South African artistes.
