Chieftainess Mukamambo Nkomeshya II of the Soli speaking people of Chongwe district in Lusaka province has been elected as new Chairperson of the House of Chiefs.
And Chief Ntambu of the Lunda speaking people of Mwinilunga district in North-Western Province has also been elected at the Vice Chairperson of the House of Chiefs replacing Chief Chikanta of the Tonga speaking people of Kalomo district in Southern province.
Chieftainess Nkomeshya, who replaced chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni speaking people of Chipata district in Eastern province, becomes the first female chief to be elected as chairperson of the House of Chiefs since its inception 49 years ago.
Clerk to the House of Chiefs Michael Pwete confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today at the ongoing three days consultative meeting for members of the House of Chiefs.
And Chieftainess Nkomeshya said the issue of customary land disputes among chiefdoms will be top on her agenda when she assumes office.
Chieftainess Nkomeshya has since pledged to work with government and all traditional rulers in the country to ensure that a strategic position on customary land in the country is soon formulated.
The female traditional ruler has since called on the 280 gazetted chiefs across the country to remain united and work together to foster economic development in Zambia.
She thanked members of the House of Chiefs for electing her adding that she was ready to dialogue with government and all key stakeholders regarding the issues affecting traditional leaders in the country.
