Zambia is ready to host the 2013 golf open tournament, Zambia Open 2013 Organising Chairman Robert Chomba has disclosed.
This year’s tournament, which is scheduled to take place in Lusaka from 15th to 19th May is expected gobble about KR3 million.
Chomba said at a press briefing in Lusaka today that despite a few financial hiccups which the organising committee has faced, Zambia was read to host a successful tournament.
He said this year’s tournament will be branded as “Zambia Sugar, Zambia Open”.
He explained that Zambia Sugar will be the major sponsor and has since pledged to pump US$150,000 into the tournament.
Chomba said the countries participating are Botswana, England, Germany, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and the giants of golf South Africa.
He said about 158 professional golfers have since registered to take part in the tournament.
He said South Africa, which has for a long time been winning the competition, has since registered 120 players to participate in this year’s tournament.
Chomba said Zambia will this year have about 15 professional golfers taking part in the 2013 Zambia open tournament.
He explained that a team of inspectors from Sunshine Tours of South Africa that are in charge of the African tournament is tomorrow expected to arrive in the country to check on the state of the golf course and other facilities.
He said the team will be led by Sunshine Coordinator Danny Zwilebel.
Chomba has appealed to members of the public and private institutions to come on board and support the tournament.
