VERIFICATION of ballot papers to be used in the five parliamentary by-elections slated for September 11, 2014 has been put off due to the non-arrival of the papers, says Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) public relations manager Cris Akufuna.
The exercise was supposed to have taken place yesterday since the ballot papers were expected to have been delivered on Sunday night from South Africa where they were printed.
In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Akufuna confirmed the postponement of the verification exercise.
“Officials from ECZ and some political parties waited at the airport but the ballot papers were not on the plane. upon enquiring from the printers, they have explained that the job has been done and there was limited space on the plane, hence the non-arrival but the ballot papers will be delivered this evening and the verification exercise will be undertaken the following day,” he said.
The by-elections are scheduled for Kasenengwa, Mkushi South, Vubwi, Solwezi Central and Zambezi West constituencies where the election of the incumbent members of Parliament were nullified on account of electoral malpractices.
