— Vice President, Guy Scott says plans to revive the National Airline have reached an advanced stage.
Dr Scott noted that Zambia has had no national carrier since Zambia Airways was liquidated in 1994 and reviving the National Airline will stimulate growth of the sub-sector.
He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Secretary to the Cabinet, Roland Msiska at the official opening of the Extra Ordinary Meeting of the Africa-Indian Ocean Planning and Implementation Regional Group conference in Lusaka today.
Dr Scott observed that the aviation sector in Africa and the Indian Ocean regions has undergone modernization in order to meet the demands, needs and expectations of the travelling public.
He also revealed that Zambia has in place a program of reforming and upgrading the legal and institutional arrangements of the civil aviation safety oversight system.
And International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Regional Director for Eastern and Sothern Africa, Meshesha Belanyeh, says ICAO is encouraged to note Zambia’s strong commitment to meeting her obligations under the Convention on International Civil Aviation of 1944 and addressing the challenges facing her civil aviation system through active cooperation.
Mr Belanyeh is pleased with the cooperation project between South Africa and Zambia on Air Operator Certification On-the-Job Training (OJT), which will build Zambia’s inspectorate capacity in the areas of airworthiness and operation aircraft.
