MULENGA Sata has commended the Rotary Clubs of Trent Bridge, Nottingham in the United Kingdom and that of Lusaka for aiding Lusaka City Library with six computers already connected to Internet.
And Rotary Club of Lusaka president Justine Mazhandu said rotary was an organisation of business and professional persons united worldwide to provide humanitarian service.
At a handover ceremony in Lusaka yesterday, Mulenga, who is Lusaka mayor, said the importance of information and communication technology could not be overemphasised.
“I must point out that despite the fact that books still remain the most popular sources of information and knowledge, electronic information in the form of electronic books, journals and Internet have launched the world into an information age,” Mulenga said in a speech read for him by councillor Macbride Sekeleti.
Mulenga said ICTs facilitated quick and easy access to a wide range of information resources worldwide.
“It is in recognition of the aforesaid that the LCC has always endeavoured to provide information resources in various formats other than books through its public library,” said Mulenga.
And Mazhandu said the Rotary Club of Lusaka was glad to respond to the request from the Save our City Library to help rehabilitate and modernise the LCC library in the form of a donation of internet ready computers.
“Under this project, Rotary has provided funding for the acquisition of six computers with requisite software and accessories for LCC library at a cost of K30,000. This will also enable the Lusaka City Library to provide Internet facilities at a fee to students and other users researching within these facilities,” Mazhandu said.
“I want to thank the Rotary Club of Trent Bridge for the donation of K27,000 and my fellow Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Lusaka for meeting the shortfall of K3,000 and for fulfilling their responsibility of delivering and installing the equipment.”
At the same occasion, a representative from Save our City Library, Chimuka Muyovwe said her organisation lobbied for the computers taking into account the need for such a library housed in the city of Lusaka to offer Internet services.
