THE Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has warned that it will soon crack down on all the unregistered vehicles that are being operated even after the 14-day grace period of registration has elapsed.
RTSA acting senior public relations manager Frederick Mubanga says the agency is concerned about the high number of accidents on the Zambian roads involving unregistered vehicles.

Mr Mubanga said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that a lot of unregistered vehicles are getting involved in the hit-and-run accidents thereby making it difficult for the agency to trace them.
“The Zambian laws state that no vehicle should be driven after the 14-day grace period has elapsed and this is what is supposed to be followed. But we are seeing a lot of unregistered vehicles being driven after the grace period has elapsed.
“We want to warn that the vehicles that will be impounded will only be given back to the owners after they have registered with RTSA and all the cases will be referred to the fast-track courts and all the drivers who will be found wanting will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
Mr Mubanga said drivers or owners of such vehicles not abiding by the Zambian laws to register their vehicles will face the wrath of the law.
He said it is sad that many drivers have chosen to disobey the rules and regulations by not registering their vehicles.
Mr Mubanga said RTSA has also observed that criminals are using unregistered vehicles to commit crimes.
He said when unregistered vehicles are used in crime, it is difficult to trace the culprits.
Mr Mubanga said the agency will soon swing into action and impound all unregistered vehicles across the country.
He said the move is aimed at ensuring sanity on the Zambian roads as well as ensuring that all drivers adhere to the traffic regulations.
Mr Mubanga further urged all motorists to observe traffic regulations to prevent road traffic accidents.
