NWP minister calls for urgent road works
Solwezi, March 11, 2013, ZANIS– North western province minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has called for urgent construction of ring roads in Solwezi to ease traffic congestion.
Mr Mubukwanu said Independence road, which is currently the only road connecting the booming mining town to all areas is heavily congested.
Mr Mubukwanu made the call over-the-weekend when works and supply minister Christopher Yaluma paid a courtesy call on him.
The provincial minister said that the major problem facing Solwezi today is congestion on the road and electricity outages.
He said the congestion on the Independence Road has become the order of the day, adding that something needs to be done urgently to open up ring roads to enable traffic move smoothly.
He disclosed that last week his office in response to try and address the situation, held a meeting with Solwezi municipal council, Roads Development Agency, Zambia National Service and Rural Roads Unit to develop a tentative plan for ring roads.
“That is the major problem we are facing here and traffic has increased immensely over the years, which is one of the symptoms of rapid urbanisation of Solwezi hence we will need to adequately respond with appropriate measures,” he said.
And Mr Mubukwanu said ZESCO will need to find ways and means to address the problem of power cuts in Solwezi so that the blackouts do not disrupt the economic activities in the province.
He said North Western province, Solwezi in particular, was strategic to the economic production of the country that in the recent past the province has been experiencing prolonged power cuts which were affecting the operations of many who depend on electricity for economic production.
