DC bemoans meaningful development to empower women
Nchelenge, March 9, ZANIS ——— Nchelenge District Commissioner) Joseph Chisakula has said Nchelenge district is lacking meaningful and sustainable economic development that can empower women.
Mr Chisakula said the district faces the challenge of economic development that would respond to the needs of the local people especially the women folk.
He said time for the emancipation of women has come and he urged the female folk in Nchelenge to rise to the occasion and define their destiny by active participation in all the spheres of social and economic endeavours.
The DC reiterated that the Patriotic Front government is resolute and committed to end the Gender Based Violence (GBV) against women through the creation of a conducive social and economic environment.
Mr Chisakula was speaking when he addressed scores of women at Nchelenge’s Freedom Square who gathered to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day held under the theme: “the Gender Agenda, Gaining Momentum” yesterday.
He said it is for this reason that since its ascendance to power, the PF government has embarked on various programmes aimed at accelerating and promoting gender equality.
He cited the promotion of women to decision making positions in the Zambia Police Service and the Judiciary among other institutions as testimony of the gains that government has made in addressing gender imbalances.
Mr Chisakula said the PF government will not relent in its provision of a sustainable development agenda that is inclusive in order to end gender imbalances.
He further noted that the PF government is also promoting female child education through programmes such as the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) under the Ministry of Education as a way of empowering women.
