The project to upgrade Kasama Airport to international standard has been revised.
Assistant Director in the department of Civil Aviation under the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Adams Daka revealed the development when the parliamentary public accounts committee (PAC) visited Kasama Airport yesterday.
Mr Daka explained that in the new contract, the airport’s runway is to be extended to 3 kilometers from the current 1.7KMs in order to cater for large aircrafts.
He said the project which is estimated to cost over K140 million will also see the runway upgraded to bituminous standard.
Mr Daka added that upgrading of the airport would bring about various advantages for Kasama and Northern Province at large.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary public accounts committee (PAC) Chairperson Vincent Mwale warned that the committee will not condone laxity by department of Civil Aviation in supervising the project.
Mr Mwale said the importance of the project cannot be over-emphasized hence the need for supervisors to ensure that it is properly done.
He added that shoddy works should not be tolerated as they are drain on national resources.
Some years back, government had allocated funds for the rehabilitation of Kasama airport but works later stalled and the project was cited for queries in the Auditor General’s reports.
Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Wynter Kabimba is tomorrow expected in Kasama.
This is ahead of the party District Conference for Luwingu slated for Saturday.
Northern Province acting PF Provincial Chairperson Peter Mwansa confirmed the development in an interview with Mano News May 22nd.
