The construction of Chiyota Youth Resource Centre in Rufunsa district of Lusaka Province has been completed and already attracted over 500 youths from within and surrounding areas have already submitted their applications for enrollment in various courses.
The resource centre, which will begin offering various courses this year, gobbled about K8 million.
Rufunsa District Commissioner Paul Kasongo disclosed to ZANIS in a telephone interview that the construction works at the centre have been completed except for electrification which is expected to be done soon since the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) is already planning to extend its grid to the district.
Rufunsa District is not yet connected to the national power grid but Mr. Kasongo expressed optimism that the power utility company will expedite the process of electrifying the district.
He said the centre was one of the most important projects in Rufunsa because it was expected to offer various skills to youths in the districts and make them employable and self-reliant
thereafter.
Meanwhile the District Commissioner has disclosed that Zesco is currently constructing a substation as part of the electrification project which is underway in the area.
He added that the power supply company has already positioned the transformers in the district while putting up of power poles has begun.
Mr. Kasongo hoped that the electrification project of the district would be completed by November this year so that public workers and residents of Rufunsa could switch from using solar and generator sets to the Zesco powered electricity.
Recently, President Sata disclosed that his government wants to establish at least one youth vocational skills training centre in each district in line with the Patriotic Front (PF) manifesto.
The President stated that government was also making optimal investment in infrastructure development through the rehabilitation and construction of youth resource centres aimed at imparting appropriate and practical skills in youths countrywide.
The Head of State cited the construction of model youth resource centres in Kafue, costing K22 million, another one in Chililabombwe at a cost of K12 million and one in Luanshya at a cost of K11 million as some of the projects that had been kick-started by his government in a
bid to offer skills to youths.
