The government Bursaries Committee has embarked on a sensitization programme countrywide to bridge the information gap between the rural and urban area pupils.
The deputy secretary for the Bursaries Committee Brian Makufele said the scheme must benefit all pupils especially the poor in society.
Mr. Makufele observed that there is an information gap regarding the minimum requirement for one to enter into a university and how to acquire the government bursary or education loan.
He said the urban pupils are more aware and have information on the bursaries scheme than their colleagues in rural schools.
He added that it is for this reason that his committee has embarked on a sensitization programme to bridge the information gap and make the pupils in rural areas aware of the benefits they could derive from the scheme.
He observed that some brilliant pupils have ended up being frustrated and spoiled after completing school despite having good results because they do not know where to seek financial help.
Mr Makufele said the bursaries scheme was there to help the needy pupils who cannot afford to pay the high tuition fees at the universities across the country but noted that the urban areas have benefited most.
“We are holding interactive meetings with the pupils in order to make them aware of what the bursaries can do for them to realise their dream career,” Mr. Makufele said.
He further said the pupils have the ability to change their situation of poverty to that of being elegant, useful and productive member of the society through discipline, royalty and hard work.
“They can still be what they want to be as long as they are able to make the right decision while they are still in school,” he said.
Mr Makufele noted that pupils from rural parts of Zambia stand a better chance of being considered for sponsorship and implored girls to take advantage of the lower cut off points.
Mr. Makufele who was accompanied by the Senior Bursaries Officer Cable Ng’andu and the computer programmer Jonathan Kamanga was speaking in Nchelenge district today when he addressed pupils at Nchelenge Secondary School.
“We are interested in your welfare, we want you to succeed but your must work hard in order to earn yourself a government bursary or education loan,” Mr. Makufele said.
