GOVERNMENT’S pragmatic initiatives to empower youths have drawn K23 million Youth Development Funds (YDF) and created more than 1,039 employment opportunities.
President Sata has also said Government has spent K87.6 million for developing youth resource centres across the country.
He said this on his Facebook page update yesterday, noting that this is in line with his announcement during the opening of the National Assembly, when he announced Government’s plans to construct youth vocational training centres across the country.
The President outlined some of the youth resource centres as Chiyota in Chongwe on which K12 million has been spent with 99 percent of works done; Chililabombwe built at a cost of K10.5 million and Kwilimuna worth K11.6 million.
Others are Kalabo Youth Resource Centre, which is being built at a cost of K23.9 million and Kafue on which Government will spend K29.6 million.
“Our Government has been disbursing loans and grants under the Youth Development Fund which is aimed at supporting the growth of sustainable youth-led SMEs into the private sector for wealth and employment creation,” President Sata said.
He said the Government, in partnership with International Labour Organisation, Food and Agriculture Organisation and New Partnership for Africa’s Development is creating decent jobs for youths and improving food security through development of sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.
Mr Sata said the programme is expected to create 3,000 new jobs among young women and men over a period of 48 months and with a budget of US$6.9 million.
He said the programme also seeks to improve the financial performance of at least 5,000 youth-owned-managed rural enterprises as well as to boost food security for the local population by way of increasing the volume of production of soya beans.
