500 jobs on offer in Kapiri Mponshi
Kapiri Mposhi, February 19th, 2014, ZANIS – Over 500 jobs for youths are on offer by local contractors engaged to rehabilitate the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) rail line in Kapiri Mponshi district.
And government has challenged the local contractors engaged to rehabilitate the rail line to perform to expectations so that they are considered for further contracts.
This follows ZRL’s engagement of seven local companies to rehabilitate its rail line in the district.
ZANIS reports that Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner, Beatrice Sikazwe disclosed the development after she inspected progress on the on-going project today.
Ms. Sikazwe said the youths have been drawn from surrounding communities within the district.
The DC expressed gratitude at the move by the companies to offer employment to the local youths noting that this will empower them with income to improve their livelihoods.
“This is our dream to see as many of our youths doing something and not just getting wasted in the streets but to be engaged in productive activities in order for them to earn a living,” Ms. Sikazwe said.
Meanwhile, Government has challenged the local contractors engaged to rehabilitate the rail line to perform to expectations so that they are considered for further contracts.
Kapiri District commissioner Ms Sikazwe has noted that there has been a notion that local contractors were not capable of delivering quality works on contracts.
“Avoid shoddy works and ensure that you properly take care of your workers to clear the notion about local contractors if you need to win more contracts to benefit our people,” Ms. Sikazwe said.
ZRL is rehabilitating its railway line from Livingstone to Chililabombwe with financial support from the 120 Million USD Euro Bond acquired by Government.
The scope of works involves replacement of wooden slippers with concrete ones, re-alignment of the rail line and bush clearing.
Last year government gave ZRL 120 Million from its Euro Sovereign Bond for recapitalization purposes of which 80 percent will be spent on track infrastructure and the remainder is earmarked to be utilized on locomotive and wagon repairs.
And a Local Youth who has been engaged by one of the local contractors has commended government for directing local companies engaged to carry out rehabilitation works on the rail line to employ local people.
Peter Matatila said the move was progressive and a fulfillment of the Patriotic Front’s (PF) government manifesto of putting more money in people’s pockets.
