House collapses; kills 77 year old woman
Mumbwa, February 15, zanies—-A 77 year old woman of chief Kabulwebulwe’s area in Mumbwa district died after a house she was sleeping in collapsed due to heavy rains.
Mumbwa District Commissioner Sunday Shamabanse confirmed to ZANIS in Mumbwa today that Kababu Makiyi of Shamakumba village was found dead at around 06:00 hours this morning in a kitchen that collapsed in the night.
Mr. Shamabanse explained that the old woman, who was initially removed from the same kitchen after it got flooded, refused to continue sleeping with her grandchildren claiming that there was a strong stench of urine because her grandchildren were bedwetting.
He added that in the night, the old lady left the house where she was sleeping with her grandchildren and decided to sleep in a cracked outside kitchen.
The woman was found trapped under the bricks by her relatives early this morning.
Meanwhile, an 18 months old baby of Nangoma also died yesterday after the house the family was sleeping in collapsed.
The baby, who was with her mother in the house, died on the spot while the mother is nursing injuries in Nangoma mission hospital.
Mumbwa District has been hit by floods due to continuous heavy rainfall.
