FIRST Lady Christine Kaseba has commended the African Union (AU) for coming up with a campaign to end child marriages.
Dr Kaseba, who moderated the opening session of the 13th General Assembly of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV and AIDS (OAFLA) here today, called on African First Ladies to
continue with their efforts in the fight against HIV and AIDS.
“We have to get to zero HIV infections, we have to save our women” Dr
Kaseba said.
And OAFLA and AU have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the existing partnership between the two organisations.
AU commissioner on social affairs, Mustafa Kaloko said the MoU is timely because issues of prevention of maternal deaths and child health were being presented to the AU heads of state and government today.
Dr Kaloko said the partnership between AU and OAFLA would strive to implement the Abuja Declaration and the newly developed campaign on child marriages.
UN WOMEN executive director, Phumzile Mlambo- Nguka said there is need to identify linkages between OAFLA and AU because both organisations are committed to getting to zero new HIV infections.
Dr Nguka expressed concern about the gross exploitation of women in Africa which is increasing their vulnerability to HIV and AIDS.
She also said it is important to intensify sex education in schools to reduce girl’s vulnerability to HIV and AIDS.
UNAIDS representative , Rosemary Museminali said HIV and AIDS should to be strategically positioned in the post 2015 agenda because it still remains unfinished business for the African continent.
