THE Zambia Table Tennis Association’s (ZTTA) preparations for the 2014 Confederation Africa Table Tennis Association (CATTA) Zone Six tournament which starts today, got a timely boost yesterday when the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) donated K30,000.
SCZ board chairperson, Mwamba Kalenga handed over the cheque to ZTTA president Charles Chenda, and said helping of affiliate sport bodies was an obligation the mother body had to undertake on behalf of Government.
SCZ’s donation leaves the ZTTA with a K30, 000 shortfall from their K190, 000 budget for the regional tournament set for the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
“The nation is giving you this money through us SCZ using public funds and therefore, you should use it wisely.
“SCZ and the nation at large expect medals from the Zambian team at this tournament because they are at home and we expect to be number one,” he said.
Kalenga also said in a quest to develop sports in the country, a provincial tournament board would be appointed to supervise tournaments.
Chenda thanked SCZ for the donation and promised to use the money wisely and ensure it benefited the participants.
“ZTTA had applied for funding last year and we are grateful that you have helped us to trying to raise the total amount for the tournament,” he said.
ZTTA patron Haroon Ghumra said he was optimistic the association would to raise the K30, 000 shortfalls by 17:00 hours today and that they look forward to a successful event.
And a five-member South Africa team, led by team manager, Clement Meyer arrived in Zambia yesterday, bringing to two, the number of countries in for the regional competition.
The first country to arrive was Namibia on Wednesday.
Ghumra said the five South Africans would be joined by two more players who missed the yesterday’s flight.
“South Africa arrived this afternoon and we are expecting Zimbabwe and Botswana to arrive tomorrow (today) by road and there has been a change in travel arrangements for Angola and we will be expecting them in the country on Saturday morning,” he said.
He said today would be reserved for official opening and flag raising ceremony with the games expected to start tomorrow.
The four-member Namibia squad is led by team doctor, Yuri Vasin.
