THE Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA) has set March 15 as the date for its elective annual general meeting that will be held in Kitwe.
Shawki Fawaz and the entire executive committee are set to re-contest their positions having been elected into office in July last year. That came after the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) upheld a vote-of-no-confidence that was passed in the then Boniface Kambikambi led executive committee.
ZBA vice president, north, Andrew Nyirenda, who announced his intention to contest his seat, said the elective AGM will be held in Kitwe and that members were free to challenge for any position.
Nyirenda said in an interview that he was seeking another term in office to finish off a number of programmes that his executive committee initiated.
He said since the new executive committee was ushered in office, a number of programmes aimed at improving the level of basketball in the country had been initiated singling out the introduction of the under-14 league on the Copperbelt.
Nyirenda named the under-14 league that was held in collaboration with schools as one progressive programme that would allow for a strong foundation for basketball in the country.
He said the current leadership had also managed to bring on board corporate community that expressed interest in offering their support to the sport.
“We have a number of programmes that we started last year which are aimed at uplifting the level of the sport in the country. I therefore feel the need to be part of a delivering team that put in place the referees and coaches committees that did not exist previously,” he said.
