——–Zambian athletics icon, Samuel Matete, who has been engaged by the Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) on a two-year contract to assist and commence the training of athletes has not yet arrived back in Zambia.
Matete, who has also been engaged by International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) as an instructor in Mauritius, was still in that country where he was winding up his tour of duty.
ZAAA president, Elias Mpondela, however, told ZANIS Sports in a telephone interview in Lusaka today that Matete has not communicated.
Mpondela further said as soon as he arrives back home he would be given a job description as to what is expected of him to do in his training programme of athletes and commence his duty.
The ZAAA president pointed out that the sportsman would be based at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) where he would be conducting his programme.
Mpondela also said Matete would be assisted by other trainers and coaches to help intensify his athletes training programme.
He added that what he needs to know was that many athletic lovers expect a lot from him and ZAAA believes he would put in his best and deliver upon the end of his two- year contract.
Mpondela believes that athletics can be developed even more and improved to high standards across the country with the help and efforts of sportsmen such as Matete.
He further added that the country has a lot of athletes that require the training services of Matete as an athletic icon who has helped to put Zambia on the African and World athletics map.
Mpondela expressed confidence that Matete would be motivated once he arrives to start the training programme as the country has plenty of athletes that need his training services.
Matete is a 400 metre-hurdles silver medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and Zambia’s most achieved sportsman.
He won a gold medal at the World Championship in Tokyo in 1991 having represented Zambia in the 400 metre-hurdles on four occasions from 1988 to 2000.
