Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya has confirmed that President Michael Sata has received the resignation of Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba.

Mr. Mwamba has attributed his resignation to the standoff between the government and the Bemba Traditional Council over the recognition of Henry Kanyanta Sosala as Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba speaking people.

Mr Mwamba is reported to have had a heated conversation with President Michael Sata over his decision to visit the Chitimukulu designate who he says is his grandfather.

Government has refused to recognize Mr. Sosola as Paramount Chief Chitimukulu, who President Micheal Sata degazzeted earlier this year as Senior Chief Mwamba.

When contacted for comment on Mr Mwamba’s resignation, Mr. Kapeya told Qfm News in a telephone interview that government is in process of responding to Mr. Mwamba’s resignation and did not want to pre-empty its response.

Mr. Mwamba announced his resignation at his residence in Kasama this afternoon.
