UNZA chancellor Jacob Mwanza said he was pleased that the university had started employing strategies to improve its rankings at international level.
Dr Mwanza said the record of seven graduands with doctorate degrees and more than 300 with masters degrees was a true reflection of UNZA’s efforts to attain the top ranking in Africa.
He said this during the 43rd UNZA graduation ceremony in Lusaka yesterday.
According to Webmetrics ranking of the world universities, UNZA is ranked number 66 in Africa and 3,970 in the world.
It falls behind University of Namibia, University of Botswana and University of Zimbabwe, which are ranked 48th, 36th and 24th, respectively, on the continent.
“To the graduands, the education you have received from this institution will be for naught. I urge you to be the very best and demonstrate to the country and the rest of the world that you are coming from the highest institution of learning in the land,” Dr Mwanza said.
UNZA vice-chancellor Stephen Simukanga said it was important to enhance the learning institution’s ranking on the international ladder as the number of universities in Africa had drastically increased.
Professor Simukanga said UNZA was determined to get recognised locally and internationally to ensure positive referencing by society.
He urged the graduands to utilise their expertise to benefit others by contributing to the country’s development.
One of the graduands, Emma Lumumba from the school of humanities and social sciences called on Government to accelerate funding to the institution to promote quality education.
