—Regional Disability Policy Analyst for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and Inclusive Development Advisor for Centre for Disability Research, Law and Policy, Charles Mwape, has called on the international community to support the Patriotic Front (PF) Government in its efforts to uplift the lives of persons with disabilities.

Dr Mwape said the PF Government has demonstrated political will by amending the Disability Act and domesticating the United Nation Convention on the rights of the Disabled which has formed the basis of new disability Act number 6 of 2012.

He said the PF Government has further increased funding to Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities in 2014 budget from K5 million to K9 million despite the fact that this is not enough.

Dr Mwape noted that if the international community partners with government, more can be done in the provision of social services to persons with disabilities with this political will being displayed by the state.

He said what Government needs now is developing an annual work plan on the implementation of the act, job creation, health, shelter, education and coordinated support through a joint steering committee of partners working in Zambia.

Dr Mwape said this in a statement released to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka toady.
