‘KK criticisms unfounded’

GOVERNMENT says it takes great exception to attacks by MMD president Nevers Mumba and self-acclaimed civil rights activist Brebner Changala against former President Kenneth Kaunda.
Dr Mumba was over the weekend reported in the media as having described Dr Kaunda as a “senile retiree” whose petty criticism could not shake his party.
But Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that Dr Mumba, a Christian and pastor, should be the last person to disrespect elders.
“As a leader of a former ruling party, Dr Mumba should have reflected more on his callous statement,” Mr Kapeya said.
And Mr Kapeya, who is Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, said accusations by Mr Changala that Dr Kaunda is dividing the country by actively participating in politics as reported in some sections of the local media are mischievous, misleading and disrespectful and should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve.
“Mr Changala ought to accept the reality that Dr Kaunda is a founding father of the nation, who possesses vast knowledge and wisdom, which we need as a nation in moving the country forward.
“Dr Kaunda’s role and guidance in the affairs of the country are beyond partisan politics. He laid a firm foundation of peace and unity, which we are enjoying as a nation,” Mr Kapeya said.
He said instead of criticising the former President, young people like Dr Mumba and Mr Changala should swallow their pride and learn from Dr Kaunda’s vast knowledge and wisdom in leadership.
“As a nation, we count ourselves lucky that Dr Kaunda is still around and providing the necessary guidance and counsel to the nation.
“Government reiterates its appreciation for the immense contribution Dr Kaunda has and continues to render to the development and well-being of the country,” Mr Kapeya said.
The minister said Government will continue according Dr Kaunda the status and attention he deserves as former head of State and founding father of the nation.
