Rufunsa District Commissioner Paul Kasongo has attributed the increase in the indiscriminate shooting of innocent people in the district to the proliferation of unlicensed firearms.
ZANIS reports that Mr Kasongo described the district’s endowment of wildlife as a blessing in disguise as this has led to most villagers to engage in poaching.
The District Commissioner was reacting to yesterdays shooting of a 59 year old woman, Esther Mwachimba of Mulilwa Village in Chief Mpanshya’s chiefdom who was shot in cold blood by her assailant identified as Shydon Chatamba Mulele of the same village.
Mr Kasongo explained that the circumstances in which Mrs Mwachimba was killed are still unknown though the assailant has been arrested and detained by Chongwe Police.
He noted that there are several unlicensed guns in the district which has led to many innocent people being killed in cold blood whenever there was a dispute.
Mr Kasongo further explained that the district also recorded a suicide case where a boy shot himself yesterday using his father’s gun.
The DC said the circumstances that led to the boy to shot himself are not yey known as police has just launched investigations into the matter.
And in a related development, police in Eastern Province are investigating a case of abortion where the victim is still admitted under police guard at Chipata General Hospital.
Zambian Police Service Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said a named medical doctor at Chipata General Hospital reported that a woman aged 27 and identified as Ticho Banda of New Jun Compound aborted a pregnancy of 6 to 8 weeks.
Ms Kanjela explained that the victim, Ticho Banda has been bleeding for the past two days and a stick of about 5 cm believed to have been used in the abortion was found to be stuck in her uterus.
And Ms Kanjela has also reported that in Lusaka province, a 24 year old woman, Astrida Sakala died after jumping off a moving Ox-cart.
Ms Kanjela explained that the incident happened around 05:30 hours along Twikatane road near Soft Centre Bottle store when the deceased jumped off the moving Ox-cart after fearing that the truck that was coming behind would hit her.
She identified the driver of the truck registration number ABT 3486 as Emmanuel Mwami, 40 of Garden House who apparently ran over her after she jumped on the road and died upon rushing her to UTH.
Ms Kanjela said Mr Mwami has since been detained in custody to assist police with investigations while the body of the deceased is in the UTH mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
