First Lady Christine Kaseba-Sata has donated assorted items to over 120 orphaned and vulnerable children in Kasama through her organization called ‘Ubutala bwa Bumi’.
Defence Minister’s wife Chama Mwamba who is also Ubutala bwa Bumi Chairperson for Resource Mobilization Committee presented the donations to Mapalo and Chikuku Day Care Centres on behalf of the First Lady.
Among the donated were blankets, sweaters, pairs of tropical shoes and assorted soft drinks.
And in a speech read on her behalf by Mrs Mwamba, Dr Kaseba said it is important for society to look after orphaned and vulnerable children in communities in order to better their living conditions.
She said children were the most affected by the high poverty levels being experienced by many households in the nation.
Dr Kaseba revealed that the donation of the blankets and sweaters to vulnerable children in Kasama was made possible by the support her organization received from its partners.
She urged Zambians to continue showing love and care to orphaned and vulnerable children in communities, adding that her organization will continue to offer special attention to the welfare of children in the country.
And speaking at the function, Mapalo Day Care Centre Coordinator Chanda Chintu thanked the First Lady for the gesture rendered to the orphaned and vulnerable children at the orphanage.
Ms Chintu observed that Dr Kaseba’s loving heart of caring for the vulnerable children especially those with critical ailments has helped to break the stigma and discrimination associated with such children.
She however said Mapalo Day Care centre is still faced with numerous challenges such as inadequate food rations and clothing for the orphaned and vulnerable children.
And Chikuku Day Care Centre Chairperson Ackson Musonda thanked the First Lady for the donation of blankets and sweaters to vulnerable children at the orphanage.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba and family have pledged to be donating foodstuff like mealie meal and rice on a monthly basis to the two Day Care Centres in a bid to sustain the welfare of the vulnerable children.
