The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development has assured the country that government is committed to resolving the issue of housing deficit in the country.
The Ministry says it is aware that housing is a critical basic human right.
Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Acting Permanent Secretary, Dr. Richard Banda said this in Lusaka when he received a petition on behalf of the Minister.
The petition was presented by the Zambia Homeless and Poor People’s Federation (ZHPPF) and its alliance partner the People’s Process on Housing and Poverty in Zambia (PPHPZ).
The two organisations have petitioned the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development to prioritise housing for vulnerable people in society.
Dr. Banda who thanked the two organizations for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves said he will deliver the petition to the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Hon. Charles Milupi, who was in parliament, when the petitioners brought their petition.
He assured the petitioners that their concerns will be addressed because currently the Ministry is doing everything possible through a coordinated approach to reduce the housing deficit in the country which curranty stands at 1. 5 Million housing units.
And Zambia Homeless and Poor People’s Federation (ZHPPF), National Coordinator Joyce Lungu called on the government through the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development to prioritize construction of houses especially for vulnerable people in society.
She said the two organizations have sadly observed that housing for vulnerable groups in society has not received much attention.
Ms. Lungu said the two organizations want to see adequate investment in the housing sector to bridge the growing housing deficit in the country.
