——-Chirundu District Council has completed the 1kilometre street lighting project from One Stop border post to Chibaketi lay bay at a cost of K 181 million old currency.

The local authority completed the first phase of the project with funding from the local government.

Council Secretary, Cosmas Chalusa, said in the first phase the local authority budgeted for a one kilometre stretch from One Stop border post through Lusaka road to Chibaketi lay bay which has since been completed.

Mr Chalusa said in an interview this morning with ZANIS that the street lighting project in the district includes roads leading to Mtendere Mission Hospital and Chiawa road among others.

He also said the first project was done by Jack Kawinga and Company which the local authority had contracted to do the work.

Mr Chalusa said the other six remaining phases would be done at the budged coast of K1 billion old currency by the local authority with its funds from revenue collections.

He said the local authority intends to light up the whole township in phases as part of developing the district.

And Chirundu District Commissioner, Maxiwell Siamalimba, appealed to the residents to guard the street lights jealously and avoid any vandalism as a way of appreciating what the local authority was doing in the district.

Mr Siamalimba said the completing of 1km stretch was the beginning of lighting the
township and commended the council for that effort.

Meanwhile, residents talked to in separate interviews praised the local
authority for completing the lighting of the 1km stretch.

Tadeo Chinoi, a resident of Mission Compound, said the lighting of the road from the One Stop border post to Chibaketi lay bay was a sign that the council has interest of the people in the district at heart.

Another resident, Gift Chanda, of Gabon compound, encouraged the local authority not to relent in their efforts to improve the standards of the district.
