Govt commits to children’s welfare
Mansa, Jun 18/13, ZANIS————–Government says it is committed to ensuring that the welfare of children in the country is uplifted.
Luapula Province Minister, Benson Kapaya, says to ensure this, government is in the process of reviewing the National Child Policy so as to ensure that it addresses the harmful practices that children go through.
Gen Kapaya observed that harmful practices like child marriages that children go through deter their development and that of the nation as they cause severe damage to their lives.
Gen Kapaya said this in Mansa yesterday during the commemoration of the Day of the African Child organized by Plan Mansa at Don Bosco Youth Training Centre.
He said government appreciates the efforts that cooperating partners play in ensuring that the welfare of children is uplifted in the country.
Earlier, Plan Mansa Program Unity Manager, Grace Mwendapole, said Plan will remain committed to ensuring that it contributes to the Millennium Development Goal of on children through various programs in child protection and participation.
Ms Mwendapole said the commemoration of the Day of the African Child gives an opportunity for all Zambians and Africans at large to reflect on the lived realities of children in Africa.
The Day of the African Child is commemorated on 16th June every year and this year’s commemorations were celebrated under the theme “Eliminating Harmful Social and Cultural Practices Affecting Children: Our Collective Responsibility”.
