Former Republican President Rupiah Banda says accusations from some sections of society that president Edgar Lungu is not a Zambian are baseless and retrogressive.

The former head of state has wondered why some politicians want to divide the country by bringing up such allegations instead of concentrating on uniting people.

Mr. Banda told ZNBC news in Lusaka today that President Lungu stood for elections twice, adding that a foreigner cannot run for elections, meaning President LUNGU is an indigenous Zambian who exercised his right.

He said people should help the president develop the country by preaching peace and unity.

Mr. Banda says people bringing up such allegations are doing so for personal gain and cheap political mileage.

The forth Republican President has since urged politicians in the country to avoid divisive politics.

Meanwhile, Mr. Banda says the death of South African anti-apartheid activist and politician Winnie Mandela is a huge blow to Africa and the world.

Mr. Banda says Mrs. Mandela touched many lives, a legacy that will live on for years to come.

He said this is because the late Mrs. Mandela stood for the good of mankind.

The former President said this in an interview with ZNBC news in Lusaka.
