UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president, Hakainde Hichilema earlier this week took a fresh plea in a matter in which he is facing an offence of false publication.

This was after chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda recused himself from handling the matter.

Mr Banda recused himself from handling the case two months ago after being overwhelmed with other political cases and re-allocated Hichilema’s case to principal resident magistrate Aridah Chuulu.

When the matter came up yesterday, Hichilema denied the charge.

This is in a case where Hichilema, 50, of Lusaka’s Serval Road in Kabulonga is charged with one count of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars allege that Hichilema on June 11, 2012 in Lusaka orally published statements in which he said, inter alia, that “the Patriotic Front (PF) had signed an agreement for the militia in Sudan to train PF youths to prepare for trouble.”

The matter was adjourned to August 27.
