ZRU to raise $50,000
By SHAMAOMA MUSONDA and MOSES CHIMFWEMBE –
THE Copperbelt Castle Sevens International Rugby tournament organising committee has pledged to raise a quarter of the US$200 000 (about KR1,1 million) budget for this year’s tournament set for September.
And First Quantum Minerals (FQM) Bwana Mkubwa technical manager Andries Scott has been elected chairman of the Copperbelt-based committee that has set it target of raising US$50 000 (about Kr 270, 000).
Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) committee member Moono Muleya, who was elected secretary during the meeting held at the Michelangelo Restaurant and Lodge in Ndola, announced the executive committee in a statement released yesterday.
Muleya said the committee that also has Joseph Chilinda, from Workers Compensation Board Control as treasurer has set its immediate task of raising the money towards the successful hosting of the tournament.
This year’s Castle Sevens tournament is scheduled for September 7-8 at the Lusaka Rugby Club in the Showgrounds with Muleya explaining that the rationale behind coming up with a Copperbelt committee was to involve other members in the Northern region, who may not have time to attend Lusaka meetings to raise funds and effectively organise the tournament.
The ZRU had earlier announced the appointment of Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) managing director, Joseph Chikolwa as chairperson for this year’s Castle Sevens International Rugby tournament main Organising Committee.
Chikolwa took over from Bank of Zambia (BoZ) Deputy Governor (Operations) Bwalya Ng’andu. The composition of various sub-committees for the main Castle Sevens Organising Committee in Lusaka will be put in place after the first meeting, which will be announced in due course.
Diggers 62 Prisons 19
Meanwhile, Champions Diggers took a huge step towards retaining the Buildcon-Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) national league title after demolishing Prisons in the rescheduled Week Eight fixture played in Kitwe.
The ‘Men at Work’ shrugged off their disappointing finish at the recently held Ndola Sevens tournament to register a resounding victory to go to 34 points, 20 ahead of second placed Red Arrows and inflicted more pain to the already struggling Prisons’ side.
Prolific Benaya Mukwamba placed two tries and scored six conversions with Patrick Chanja, Hopeman Kaimana, Patson Kasonde, Philip Kamanga and Ntumba Besa all scored a try while Prisons scored a three tries through Peter Mukosha, Chisenga Mukosha and Mos
