Government has announced it intends to re-open the University of Zambia in Lusaka and the Copperbelt University in Kitwe on or around the 10th of April 2016.
And Higher Education Minister Dr. Micheal Kaingu says government has abolished and withdrawn the payment of meal allowances for students at the two institutions.
Kaingu says the decision to scrap off the facility was meant to open up space for the introduction of way for the introduction of the Students Loans and Scholarship Scheme in January 2017.
In a ministerial statement to Parliament, Dr. Kaingu says the facility had been abused over the years and had become a source of student disturbances at the two institutions.
He further disclosed that government had slapped conditions on management of both Universities if they were to open.
Dr. Kaingu said students will have to sign a commitment form not to indulge in protests and that management should enforce strict use of the student I.D and the installation of security camera’s on campus.
Kaingu’s announcement has received mixed feeling from especially the students.
