POLICE in Lusaka have arrested former national boxing and Africa Boxing Union heavyweight champion Joseph ‘No Pressure’ Chingangu for theft of a motor vehicle.
Chingangu was arrested last Friday and is currently detained at Kabwata police station in Lusaka.
Police acting spokesperson Esther Mwata-Katongo confirmed that Chingangu was arrested on Friday evening and charged with theft of motor vehicle.
She said Chingangu was arrested in connection with the theft of Pro box Station Wagon ALH 7159 belonging to Xianchan-Wang construction company.
“The vehicle was parked at a Chinese national’s house in Kabwata on February 4 and was reported stolen in the early hours of the following day,” Katongo explained.
“The following car was seen with Chingangu at a filling station in Kamwala, but when he was confronted he drove off and entered Chibolya. We have overwhelming evidence connecting him to the theft and he will appear in court soon.”
Police sources say Chingangu admitted to driving the vehicle but claimed he took it on a test drive from people he wanted to buy it from.
“Now Chingangu has admitted that he was driving the car but that he was testing it because he wanted to buy it. But how can he go on a test drive alone? When you are going on a test drive, you are supposed to go with the people that are selling the car but why was Chingangu alone?
And he is also claiming he doesn’t know the people who were selling the car,” the sources said.
The sources said the car was still missing and would continue to detain the former boxer.
In his hay days as a boxer, with his heavy and powerful punches, 46-year-old Chingangu caused damage to many of his opponents.
He became national heavyweight champion in 2007 after brutalising and unseating Francis
‘Galagata’ Zulu in a bout at the Mulungunshi International Conference Centre.
The following year, Chingangu beat Osbourne Machimana for the vacant Africa Boxing Union heavyweight title before defending it against Paakwesi Ankarah in Lusaka.
Chingangu was last in the ring in 2012 when he beat Elvis Moyo in Johannesburg.
