A new research report on sex work in Zambia has revealed that the majority of sex workers indulge in sex work due to economic hardships.
Out of four hundred and seven (407) sex workers interviewed, three hundred and ninety three 393 indulge in sex work due economic hardships, poverty, lack of survival support, peer pressure and broken extended families among others.
And speaking during the launch of the report whose research was conducted by TASINTHA, in Lusaka today, Gender and Child Development Minister Nkandu Luo said sex work is the worst form of gender based violence.
Professor Luo says she personally cannot stand on any podium to promote sex work because it has a lot of negative effects on the girls and women.
She explains that it is also unfortunate that many of the TASINTHA members that were recruited in the early 90’s have died due to poor health and now the onus remains on the organization to continue working hard to ensure that the lives of many girls and women are protected from indulging in sex work.
Professor Luo states that it is also worrying to note that many of the girls interviewed during the research have found themselves in such activity due to alcohol abuse, disappointment in love relationships and abusive homes.
She says parents in this regard have a huge responsibility to ensure that the girls are taught to live a humble life and encourage them to get busy with other things that can better their lives.
The Gender Minister has further stressed the need for local authorities to consider conducting serious inspections in night clubs that have continued to allow underage patrons.
And speaking at the same function TASINTHA Head of Programmes Lucy Bwalya says her organistsion is working flat out to ensure that the lives of many girls engaging in sex work are changed for the better.
The research was conducted in October 2014 and targeted all the ten provinces and a total of eleven districts were covered among them Nakonde, Mansa, Chipata, Mongu, Livingstone Lusaka, Solwezi, Kitwe, Chongwe, Chilanga and Kapiri Mposhi
