A 24-YEAR-OLD woman of Solwezi has been sentenced to seven years simple imprisonment by the Solwezi High Court for causing the death of a man after stabbing him in the head during a fight over a debt.
Kitwe High Court judge-in-charge Catherine Makungu on Wednesday jailed Pelezo Yonala after she pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.
Yonala was initially charged with murder.
Particulars of the offence are that Yonala, on October 2 last year in Solwezi, unlawfully caused the death of Anthony Sikatuha.
Passing the sentence, Mrs Justice Makungu said she had taken Yonala’s mitigation into consideration.
“On your own admission of guilt, I sentence you to seven years simple imprisonment with effect from the date of your arrest on October 5, 2013,” Mrs Justice Makungu said.
In mitigation, Yonala pleaded with the court to exercise maximum leniency on her because she is a first offender and a divorcee with four children.
Facts before the court were that on the fateful day, Yonala picked up a quarrel with Mr Sikatuha over a debt she owed him which she refused to pay.
The court heard that Yonala and Mr Sikatuha had an altercation and a fight ensued leading to Yonala stabbing Mr Sikatuha in the head.
Mr Sikatuha sustained a deep cut and he was taken to a nearby clinic and later referred to Solwezi General Hospital.
The court heard that Mr Sikatuha was later referred to Kitwe Central Hospital, where he died on October 2 last year.
A postmortem report indicated that Mr Sikatuha died of a fractured skull and brain damage.
