Zambia will host the Zone Six tournament at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
Zambia Table Tennis Association (ZTTA) patron Haroon Ghumra said in Lusaka yesterday that the squad would undergo some intensive training at OYDC in readiness for the regional event.
Ghumra said the team would be drilled by world class coaches in Li Gongming and Zhang Goudong from China, raising Zambia’s prospects of doing well at the tournament.
The two are attached to ZTTA for a year to help improve the game in Zambia.
“Our players are ready for the tournament because they have been training either collectively at OYDC or individually at their respective clubs since October last year,” he said.
He said ZTTA was taking the zonal championships scheduled for January 31 to February 2 seriously, hence the need for the team to prepare adequately.
“The training programme by our coaches will focus on sharpening the players’ attacking skills and ensure they are mentally and physically prepared for the tournament,” he said.
Ghumra also said ZTTA was still scouting money to meet the K190, 000 budget needed to stage the championship.
Despite the money trickling in slowly, he said, the association was pleased that the corporate world were still willing to help out.
Ghumra thanked Dynamax Distribution, Decotex Paints Limited, OYDC, Lusaka Hotel, Nice Business Ventures, Shreeji Investments and Magic Advertising and Promotions Limited for their support towards the hosting of the event.
He said part of the donations were coming in the form of some companies offering free accommodation to players and officials while others releasing money.
