Chief Ndake supports government on removal of subsidies
Chipata, June 26, 2013, ZANIS………A Traditional Leader in Eastern province has supported government’s decision to remove consumption subsidies on maize and fuel.
Chief Ndake of Nyimba district says the decision by government should not be criticized as it was done in good faith to foster infrastructure development in the country.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, Chief Ndake explained that there is need for people in the country to understand that the subsidy on maize was only removed on consumption as production is still been subsidies.
He said on fertilizer government did not completely remove the subsidy as it is still subsidizing through paying K150 as farmers will only pay K100 for a bag of fertilizer.
Chief Ndake stated that on fuel the move by government was aimed at ensuring that everyone in the country benefited from the country’s growing economy.
He explained that in the past only people with vehicles were benefiting from the country’s improved economic performance.
Meanwhile, Chief Ndake has also praised government for resuscitating operations at the Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ).
He noted that the resumption of full operations at the plant will go a long way in boosting the agriculture sector in the country.
The Traditional Leader who himself worked for NCZ for 23 years said recapitalising the NCZ will also enhance economic development for the benefit of the people.
And Katete District Commissioner Kaiza Kunda thanked people of his district for understanding the rationale behind the removal of subsidies by government.
Colonel Kunda said people in Katete are slowly appreciating the government’s move to use the money towards improving their wellbeing by building more schools, hospitals and roads.
He disclosed that the provision of improved service delivery has always posed a challenged due to lack of adquate resources as government had to subsidise a lot of things hence the removal of subsidies on certain things will hence development in the country.
Col. Kunda added that Katete district has for a long time lagged behind in terms of development therefore will benefit through infrastructure development from the money that will be realised from the removal of subsidies.
Government has removed subsidies on maize and fuel in order to save money for infrastructure development in the country.
