Hippos claim another life in Kalabo District
Kalabo, June 22nd, 2013, ZANIS ——– Another fisherman has been killed by a hippo but this time on the Luanginga River just some three days after a similar incidence occurred on the Luambimba River in Kalabo district of Western province.
Victor Mwechela Lyuwa aged 55 of Simatapelo Village, Chief Mwanamambo , Liuwa area in Kalabo district was killed by a hippo at Kalumbu area on the Luanginga River on Thursday around 08 : 00 hours when he went to check on his fishing nets.
Both Kalabo District Commissioner Irene Mate and relative to the deceased Mwiyambango Sikeba confirmed the incident in an interview in Kalabo today.
Ms’ Sikeba and Nyambe said that the hippo hit the canoe in which the deceased Lyuwa was aboard which made him to trip over before the mammal attacked him .
Alert villagers in the area rushed to his rescue and rushed him to Kaluwe Rural Health Centre where he later died. He was put to rest at Makoma area.
Last Sunday a 56 year old Hebert Kashweka Sumbwa was also killed by a hippo in between 08 00 hours and 09 00 hours at Ndalabangwana area on the Luambimba River in Kalabo district when he also went to check on his fishing nets.
And Kalabo District Commissioner Irene Mate says that it was very unfortunate that that a related incidence has occurred within a period of three days.
Mrs. Mate last Tuesday another person was killed by a hippo.
She said ZAWA officers should seriously look into this matter of hippos terrorizing human life and addresses it immediately.
