Scholarships best motivation for sportspersons-Chileya
Lusaka, June 21 ,ZANIS—Lusaka Province Chess Association (LPCA) president Bwalya Chileya has said awards in form of scholarships were the best ways to motivate sportsmen and women in the country.
Chileya said scholarships will enable sportsmen and women, particularly those in minor sports disciplines, to sustain themselves when they retire from active sports.
ZANIS Sports reports that Chileya has since commended companies who have continued to award scholarships to various chess players in the country saying the gesture will stand the taste of time.
“I wish to commend all the companies in Zambia who have in the recent past awarded scholarships as awards to distinguished chess players. I can attest that this is the best way of motivating them,” he said.
Chileya however expressed displeasure at the increasing number of former sportsmen and women loaming the streets due to lack of formal employment for them to sustain their lives.
Meanwhile, Chileya has said his association will soon embark on a massive chess players’ talent identification programme in various schools across Lusaka.
He said the knowledge of chess should be well popularised and understood in schools if the country is to groom future players.
Chileya also said the LPCA will continue to use monthly tournaments as the foundation for grooming future players who would compete favourably in both national and foreign competitive games.
Lusaka Province Chess Association (LPCA) Zone 4 is an affiliate of the Chess Federation of Zambia (CFZ).
