Govt partners with UNDP in constructing a multipurpose dam in Siavonga District
Siavonga, June 21st, 2013, ZANIS — GOVERNMENT in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is constructing a KR 2.5 million dam in chief Chipepo’s chiefdom in Siavonga district.
Siavonga Senior Agricultural Officer Anderson Mutinta confirmed the development in an interview in Siavonga District, today.
Mr. Mutinta said the multipurpose dam that will be used for irrigation, watering livestock, and fish farming is constructed to help farmers come to terms with the adverse effects of drought experienced in the area.
Mr. Mutinta who was speaking at Siankapu dam explained that the dam will be a water reservoir to store water that has been flowing into the Zambezi river during the rainy season.
Over 200 households in chief Chipepo’s area in Siavonga district will directly benefit from the dam as they are far away from the Zambezi river.
The infrastructure is constructed under Climate Change Adaptation Project funded by the UNDP and supervision works carried out by the ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
‘’Drought and flash floods have necessitated the construction of the dam meant as a water holding reservoir instead of letting water flow to the Zambezi,’’ said Mr. Mutinta.
And Technical Officer under the Technical Services branch Kelvin Siisii says that the water holding capacity is 689,000 cubic metres.
Mr. Siisii noted that Nzovu transport and company contracted to construct the dam is expected to complete the works at Siankapu dam in August this year.
He observed that 45 per cent of the works so far have been done in which more than three metres of the dam wall has been constructed and the contractors are currently working on the spill way.
